Lexington’s Freedom Train committee, along with Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, invite the public to a community event this Juneteenth, where they will unveil a sculpture of two significant historical figures.
“Towards Freedom” is the centerpiece and first phase of a monument dedicated to Lewis and Harriet Hayden, two of Lexington’s enslaved who became famed abolitionists. The monument also remembers the stories of other enslaved persons in Lexington and commemorates their paths to freedom via Lexington’s Underground Railroad.
